-><!-- DisplayFullObituaryText -->Smith, SallySally Smith, age 82, passed away on Friday July 19, 2013 at her home in West Nyack, New York with her family lovingly near her. She was born to John and Margaret (Somers) Brennan on January 28, 1931 in the Riverdale neighborhood of the Bronx. Sally grew up in Yonkers, New York during the depression with her parents, three sisters and brother. The lessons of this time were not lost on her and perhaps strengthened her appreciation for whatever blessings life may bestow upon us all. After graduating high school, Sally studied art at the Phoenix School of Design in NYC. Sarah (Sally) Margaret Cecelia Brennan caught the eye of her future husband William Robert Smith at a 1952 Knights of Columbus dance in NYC, where they 'cut a rug' and thereafter shared a romance for more than sixty years. Sally and Bill were married at Sacred Heart Church in Yonkers in 1955, and moved to Rockland in 1961, where she and her husband raised their three sons. Sally's keen intellect was a staple of her personality and also served as a springboard into many subjects of interest. A voracious reader, she absorbed everything she could get her hands on once a subject grabbed her attention. She loved, among many things, her classical music, taking particular joy in symphony and chamber music. As a parent, Sally was ardently involved in the early growth of the Green Meadow Waldorf School, assisting in class activities and parent groups. She organized several concerts and chaired or co-chaired Green Meadow's acclaimed art & pottery show.Sally was a founder of the Conservative Party of Rockland in the early 1960's. A gifted writer, she wrote speeches and press releases for the fledgling movement, and was a 'Goldwater Girl' at the 1964 New Hampshire Primary. Passionate in her belief of right and wrong and in her conviction of what was best for her country and community, she felt Christ's love in all people and living things. She had a way of seeing the best in others, an appreciation for all beauty in the world, and shared wonderful relationships with folk of many perspectives and beliefs. She enrolled in Rockland Community College in her 40's and was a straight - A student. Her artistic soul led her to study poetry with Dan Masterson, Rockland's Poet Laureate, and to continue painting and drawing studies with noted Nyack artist William Bruckner. Her interest in painting drew its genesis from the works of the Great Masters. Sally's work was featured in several art shows. Sally's poems have provided tone and atmosphere for family and special occasions. Her paintings and pastels adorn homes and offices locally and in Florida, where in later years Sally and Bill maintained their Winter home, expanding their circle of friends and co-adventurers.Not limited to the paintbrush or pen, Sally developed a love of tennis in the 1970's, and enjoyed life-long friendships with many kindred spirits from the Nyack Field Club. She also continued on with her passion for the game in later years with friends at the tennis club in Jonathan's Landing in Jupiter Florida. She and Bill also became avid skiers, and spent many thrilling hours on the slopes of upstate New York, New England, Colorado and the European Alps. Her fondness for adventure also took her to Mexico and Puerto Rico where more lifelong friendships were formed.Sally embraced the spiritual, and for decades engaged in humble study of the Gospels and other transcendent works, which she was happy to discuss. She traveled to the cities, countryside and spiritual centers of Europe, and was greatly moved by the divine inspiration and beauty of the art and architecture of the many countries she visited, including Italy, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, France, Hungary, The Czech Republic, Ireland and England. Domestically, Sally made sure that her family's life was permeated with great books, music, art, prayer, reverential verse and reflection. Notwithstanding, her life was punctuated with many days driving and rooting for her sons on the baseball diamond, basketball court & tennis court! Born with an irrepressible gift of gab, and in the words of her granddaughter, a 'sassy' approach to life, Sally most recently spoke knowingly of leaving this world, crossing the threshold to be with the Angels and their heavenly symphonies. Above all else, Sally's intellect, goodness and moral fiber gave her a profound appreciation for humans' deeds on Earth and the certainty that we are here for a higher purpose. She believed at the core of human existence is love, and in the eventual ascendance of love and good in the world for the betterment of humankind. She lived by that example. While her family and friends will miss her, Sally bestows a legacy of many hearts touched and a life well-lived. Sally leaves behind her loving husband William R. Smith, her son William F. Smith and his wife (her devoted daughter-in-law) Barbara Russ Smith, her son Craig Smith and his loving companion Lenore, her son Donald Smith, her adoring grandchildren William C. Smith, Jacqueline S. Smith, Christopher R. Smith and step-grandchildren Mariel Rondinelli, Kathryn Stack and Ryan Stack. Her brother Peter and sister Catherine (Kay) predeceased her. Sally is also survived by her sisters Elizabeth (Betty), Josephine (Jo) and many nieces and nephews. Visiting hours will be on Monday July 22 from 2 - 5 & 7 - 9 pm at the Joseph W. Sorce F. H. Inc. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday July 23 at 11:30am in St. Anthony's Shrine Church, 36 West Nyack Rd. Nanuet, NY. Joseph W. Sorce F. H.
