ObituarySally June (nee Kelly) Smith died at the Hope Hospice House in Fort Myers, Florida on February 4th after a brief illness. She was born in Atlantic City, New Jersey on June 20, 1927. Sally married John E. Smith, a naval aviator, after a brief courtship. Their marriage, and love, lasted 60 years until his death in 2006. She raised and nurtured 4 children and was both mom and dad during John's many military absences.Sally was a wonderful military wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother to her family; and an endearing friend to all who knew her. She was the stable rock in our family who ensured that we remained a close knit group. She and John made sure they visited everyone often; even though we were spread out from coast to coast. She was very loving, close and nurturing to the sons and husband of her dear daughter Sharon, who died at an early age. Sally will be remembered for her beauty, sense of style, beautiful homes, fabulous entertaining and reign as Miss Atlantic City Beach Patrol in 1944. Sally and John retired to Windermere, FL for almost 30 years before again moving to Fort Myers to be close to their daughter, Colleen Hillmyer. They traveled abroad often to places such as England, Ireland, Hong Kong, Russia, Italy, Germany, Cambodia and other countries. She and John enjoyed casinos very much and were frequently gambling in Atlantic City, Mississippi and Las Vegas casinos.Sally is survived by her daughter Colleen, and her husband Barry Hillmyer, her son Patrick Kelly, and his fiancée Jill; and her son John Edward Jr., and his wife Jill Suzanne. She is affectionately remembered as "MOM" to her 11 grandchildren; Norman, Casey, Ryan, Brady and Patrick Lessard; Katie (Brett) Rodriguez and Brian Brett; Shannon and Caron Smith, and Patrick and Kelly Rose Smith; a very special son-in-law, Norman Lessard and his wife, Cindy and their children: Bob, Anna and Drew and 15 great-grandchildren. She is further survived by nephews, nieces, and other relatives and friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her dear husband John (Smitty), her beloved daughter, Sharon (Smith) Lessard and her dear brother, Frank Kelly.A Memorial Mass will be held on February 8, 2008 at 12 Noon from the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 2157 Cleveland Ave., Fort Myers, FL. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Fort Myers Memorial Gardens, 239-936-0555.
