WALKER, SUE JANET OVERTON - was born January 30, 1927 to W.B. (Wilson Bass) and Effie Lew (White) Overton of Erwin, TN. She had two brothers and a sister: Aahmes Tyler Overton (Gladys Wolpert) and (Thommie Rhodes), Rev. Wilson Burney Overton (Miriam Card) and Glenda Overton Tilson (Glenn). She was a very proud "Golden Pioneer" graduate of Tusculum College, Class of 1948. In 1950, she married her soul mate, Orby James Walker, son of John Monroe Sterling Greene Walker and Jessie Myrtle Steele. The couple moved to Knoxville and in 1958 their only daughter was born, Robin Steele Walker. Suzy had nephews and nieces: Aahmes and Marilyn Overton, Bob and Ann Overton, Patricia Watson, Miriam and Sam Lawhorn, Georgann and Tom Byerly, Judy Stansberry, Wilson and Brenda Overton, Glenn and Susan Tilson, Lew and Doug Higgins, David and Gina-Marie Tilson, and Janet and Allen Green. From Orby's side were Fred and Ted Walker, Margie and Ashley Elledge, Sylvia and George Hunter, Shirley Darnel, and Jewel Harvey. She also had numerous great-nieces and nephews. Orby passed away in December of 1996. Suzy, Orby and Robin were all members of Graystone Presbyterian Church where Suzy served as an Elder, Sunday School Superintendant and several terms as Clerk of Session. There they have a strong faith family. In 1960 Thomas Newland hired Suzy to be his Administrative Secretary at Fort Sanders Presbyterian Hospital. Suzy was proud to have earned the professional title of "Certified Professional Secretary" and was active in her professional organization, IAAP. She was several times recognized as the local Secretary of the Year and once progressed to the International SOTY competition where she placed second. After retiring once from Administration, Suzy went back to work at the hospital part-time for ten years as the Receptionist in the Surgical Lounge. Altogether, she worked for 42 years at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center where she was loved and admired. She enjoyed meeting "The Lunch Bunch" - Barbara Nicely, Germaine Gombert, Jeannie Stephens, Judith Hodge, Daphne Wiggall, Barbara Laymond and Joleen Cureton, and volunteering in the Library with Nedra Cook. Suzy and Orby were both members of the South Knoxville Optimist and Opti-Mrs. Clubs. For a while, Suzy joined Robin as a member of McGhee-Tyson Squadron of The Civil Air Patrol and she was a member of Clan Stewart Society in America and DAR. Suzy and Orby were on the Board of the John Sevier Memorial Association and were also long-time members of the East Tennessee Historical Society. Suzy was blessed with many close friends, co-workers, and neighbors. She was a "mom" to all the "brothers and sisters," Robin has added, especially The Firm (Karen Hawkins, Harriet Cooper, Donna Long, Debbie Painter, Teena Rassega, Barbara Benson, Miriam Zimmermann, Amy Anderson, and Mary Conn.) Special were Laura and Steve Cheatham, and Beth Urquhart. In recent years, Wilma Parrott and Holston Rehab have taken special care of her. Suzy passed away on August 6, 2014. She would want any donations in lieu of flowers to be sent to Graystone Presbyterian Church 139 Woodlawn Pike Knoxville, TN 37920, Tusculum College PO Box 5040, Greeneville, Tennessee 37743, or Fort Sanders Foundation 280 Fort Sanders West Blvd., Suite 202 Knoxville, TN 37922.
