Obituary of Shirley Carter


-->Shirley Carter CHESTER, SC-- Shirley Petrea Carter, 57, of 2625 Center Road, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 24, 2009 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Born in Gaffney, she was the wife of Jesse Herman Carter and the daughter of Betty Anthony Petrea of Gaffney and the late Billy Gene Petrea, Sr. She was a former restaurant manager and a member of a Gospel band. Mrs. Carter was a member of New Hope United Methodist Church in Chester and attended Cornerstone Freewill Church, where she served as a pianist. In addition to her husband, also surviving are three sons, Lee Wayne Matthews, Jr. and wife, Nanette of Mayo, John Stanley Glasbrooks and wife, Debra A. of York and Dennis Russell Carter and wife, Susan of Powder Springs, GA; a brother, Billy Gene Petrea, Jr.; seven grandchildren, Lee W. Matthews III, Robert Wayne (Cody) Matthews, Rex Tyler Matthews, Ashley Glasbrooks Carter, John Michael Glasbrooks, Austin Carter and Megan Carter; two great-grandchildren, Davis Wayne Matthews and Brooklyn Elizabeth Carter. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 PM on Tuesday, January 27, 2009 at Blakely Funeral Home and Wednesday, January 28, 2009 from 2:00-3:00 PM at New Hope United Methodist Church in Chester, SC. Funeral services will immediately follow at 3:00 PM in the church with Rev. Melvin Pressley officiating. Interment will be in New Hope United Methodist Church Cemetery.
