EPSOM -- Ruth "Janet" Smith, 80, also of Hollywood, Fla., died June 7, 2009, at Memorial Hospital in Pembroke, Fla. She was born in Burlington, Vt., Sept. 11, 1928, the daughter of William and Jettie (Curtis) Gero. She was raised in Vermont and New Jersey and moved to Exeter more than 60 years ago. Mrs. Smith was employed at F.W. Woolworth and the Globe store in Exeter for several years. She and her husband also owned and operated Country Fare Inn in Moultonborough for 20 years and "Chicken Like Your Mamas" concession at various fairs. She was an excellent cook and an accomplished seamstress. She also enjoyed playing bingo and reading and was always open to whatever life had to offer. The family includes her husband of 53 years, Kenneth C. Smith Sr. of Epsom and Hollywood, Fla.; one daughter, Linda (Jones) Calhoun of Exeter; three sons, Ronald Jones of Stratham, Kenneth Smith Jr. of Epsom and Gary Smith of Rochester; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandson; one sister, Beverly Novell of Epping; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. IN HER LIFE: A loving wife, mother and grandmother, she will be forever cherished and greatly missed by her family. She was predeceased by her brother, William Gero, in 1981.
