NELSON, Ruth (nee Herman)June 27, 1931 – June 30, 2016On Thursday, June 30, 2016, Ruth Nelson of Edmonton passed away at the age of 85 years.Ruth was a very private, quiet, introspective lady with a dignity that garnered respect. She had a strong moral compass and the strength of character that allowed her to stay true to her convictions. Mom was the matriarch of our family. She nurtured, protected and encouraged our individuality. She showed us respect and instilled in each of us a sense of duty, honour and responsibility. The beauty in her life came from the pride she felt watching all of us bloom and prosper. Mom was an avid gardener of both flowers and vegetables and loved the tranquility and sense of accomplishment as she watched her plants grow and flourish. She was an expert seamstress and a Master at petit point. She loved to set picture puzzles, the more pieces the better, was a pin-toppling bowler and a crossword aficionado. Darlene (Melvin) Davis, David (Debbie) Nelson, Joan (Brett) Hall, Robert (Stephanie) Nelson, Andrew (Dulce) Nelson, her six grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter as well as many nieces, nephews and friends are all better people for having known her. We will forever celebrate her love for us and her accomplishments. We will honour her passing with the respect and dignity that were the very cornerstones of her life.Ruth was predeceased by her grandson, Joseph Velthuis (2006); husband, Stan Polny (1998); parents, Jacob and Maria (Kelln) Herman both in 1981; siblings and their spouses, Magdalena and David Gritzfeld; Jacob and Julia Herman; Kay and Armin Tourney; Samuel and Ardis Herman; and her twin sister, Clara and D''Alton Billingsley. The family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses and caregivers at the Mel Miller Hospice, Unit 9Y of the Edmonton General Continuing Care Centre, for their professional and compassionate care during Mom''s final months there.A Celebration of Ruth''s Life will be held on Monday, July 11 at 2:00 p.m. at Park Memorial Chapel, 9709 – 111 Avenue, Edmonton.
