Obituary of Ruth-Hall Jordan

Ruth Hall Jordan passed away Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002, at Greenville Memorial Hospital. She was best known by the nickname, Memi J., which was given to her by her granddaughter, Ember. She was the daughter of the late James Pleasant and Hattie Smith Hall and was the devoted widow of Bailey Young Jordan "B.Y." She is survived by her daughter, Voncie Jordan Deitz, of Greenville, and her husband, Emmett Edwin Deitz; and granddaughters, Ember Noelle Deitz of New York City, and Holly Deitz Nordling and her husband, Jay Woodrow Nordling, also of New York City. Ruth became a Christian at a young age and was a member of Paris Mountain Holiness Baptist Church, which held its last service in 1989. Some of her fondest childhood memories were of Paris Mountain and the camp meetings she attended there. It was at a camp meeting where she met her future husband, who confided to friends that she was the sweetest young lady he had ever met. She was a life-long resident of Greenville, but she was by no means a homebody. Her family never tired of hearing the stories of how she and her childhood friend took their first car trip to Hickory as young girls, and made sure to stop at every gas station to see that they were going the right way. Or about her trip to Indiana with the Carolina Ladies gospel quartet to record an album in 1929. During World War II, she packed up her home and her young daughter Voncie and traveled to Oceanside, Calif., to be with her husband, as he served in the Marines at Camp Pendleton. She was always ready to "get in the car and go" no matter where the road was taking her. And she always made sure to thank the Good Lord for a safe journey upon her return. Ruth was predeceased by three brothers, James Newton, Rolly Jackson and Walter Jethro; and three sisters, Ruby Lee Bridges, Hattie Elizabeth and an infant sister, Lucy Ann. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Taylors First Baptist Church, 200 W. Main St., Taylors, SC 29687. Graveside services will be held today at Woodlawn Memorial Park, at 1:30 p.m., with visitation prior to the service, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Downtown Chapel. The family is at the home of Emmett and Voncie Deitz, 19 Ellesmere Drive.
