Obituary of Ruth-E. Carter


Carter, Ruth E. LATHAM Ruth E. Carter, 99, passed away on Wednesday evening, December 15, 2010 at the Teresian House in Albany with her devoted son by her side. Born in Evart, Michigan on February 26, 1911, she was the daughter of the late George and Flora Williams Ballantyne. Raised and educated in Michigan, she received a degree in education at Central Michigan University and began a lifelong career in teaching. With her beloved husband, the late Harold Carter, she relocated to Syracuse, N.Y. and they subsequently came to Latham in 1952, where she lived and raised her family and continued her career for many years as a teacher in the South Colonie School District until her retirement. Ruth was a devoted member for many years of the Calvary Methodist Church in Latham. She enjoyed being active, and was an avid bowler, golfer, card player, and she enjoyed artistic painting, and watching the NY Yankees. Ruth also traveled to her winter home in Clearwater, Fla. for many years and enjoyed many fine times there. She was a wonderful daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, and friend and will be missed. Survivors include her devoted children, Janet (Charles) Maxwell of Leland, N.C., Sara (Jack Palmer) Johnston of Miami, Fla. and Robert (Carol) Carter of Colonie; her cherished grandchildren, Robert (Heather) and Tracy Carter, Heather (Chris) Pirigyi, and Jennifer (Shawn) Angell; treasured great-grandchildren Ashley, Christopher, and Jackson. In addition to her husband, Ruth was predeceased by her brother, George Ballantyne, whose wife Helen survives. In keeping with her wishes, funeral services will be private at the convenience of the family. As a tribute to her memory, contributions would be appreciated to Shriners Hospital for Children, 516 Carew St., Springfield, Mass. 01104. The family would like to send special thanks to all the staff of the Teresian House in Albany, for the wonderful care and compassion shown to Ruth during her stay there. Arrangements are under the direction of the Bowen & Parker Bros. Funeral Home, Latham.
