She was born June 7, 1928 in Decatur Co., TN, the daughter of the late B.S. and Beatrice Averett and was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Herman Smith; two brothers, Herman Averett and Newman Averett.She is survived by her daughter, Jan Smith Phillips of Memphis, TN; granddaughter, Marcia Ruth Phillips and a great granddaughter, Chloe Nicole Waters all of Memphis, TN; brother, Marvin Averett of Scotts Hill, TN; two sisters-in-law, Ruth Averett of Decaturville, TN and Joyce Averett of Scott Hill; brother-in-law, William Smith of Parsons, TN; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.Ruth was a homemaker for 60 years. Prior to that, she had attended Business College in Nashville and was a professional secretary for TVA. Ruth graduated from Scotts Hill High School as Valedictorian of her senior class. She was a member of North Jackson Church of Christ for many years and a former bible school teacher.Funeral service will be held 3 p.m., Tuesday, May 13, 2014 at Arrington Funeral Directors with David Powell officiating.
