Ruby M. Brown, 88, went to be with her Lord and Savior Monday, Jan. 10, 2011, at Gadsden Health Care surrounded by her family and employees of GHC who loved her dearly. Funeral service was at 7 p.m. Thursday at Siberton Baptist Church. Bro. David Carpenter and Bro. Matt Carpenter officiated with burial at Red Hill Cemetery, Ivalee. Morgan Funeral Chapel directed. Mrs. Brown was born March 3, 1922, in Blount County and graduated from Oneonta High School, class of 1941. She married George Brown Jr. Aug. 23, 1941, and was a resident of Attalla until moving to Gadsden Health Care two years ago. Being a very independent woman, it was not easy to give up her household, but she became "Mama" to several employees who loved and gave our mother wonderful care. She was a devoted member of Siberton Baptist Church for 36 years and former member of Ivalee Baptist Church, rocking many babies in the church nurseries, and in later years taught the Ladies Sunday School class. She cooked a full-course breakfast every Saturday morning in the mid-70s for Siberton's bus workers and started a quilting ministry at Siberton Baptist approximately 20 years ago, which continues to this day. She loved mission work and made 12 mission trips with the Etowah Baptist Association, teaching VBS to children in Wyoming. During the past two years at GHC, she became a prayer partner with Gail Gibson of Albertville, who helped give our mother a feeling of purpose to still serve God by praying for others. She loved to keep up with daily events and loved reading her Bible. A seamstress, she sewed her first dress at the age of 5 and later in life made clothes for her children and grandsons. She also hand-smocked dresses for many little girls throughout the years. Mother was an "Outstanding Woman of Faith" and raised us by the ways of the Lord. She loved her family more than life itself. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Brown Jr.; parents, Fate and Rose Beasley; one brother; one sister; and son-in-law, Mike Watkins.Leaving behind cherished memories are her children, son, Ewell and Gail Brown; daughter, Brenda and Russ Gunnells; grandsons, Patrick and Rosie Brown, Dustin and Ashley Watkins; chosen granddaughter, Joy Carpenter Lekar; stepgrandchildren, Ryan Gunnells, Rebecca Gunnells and Denise Bachelor; great-granddaughter, Saralyn Brown, who was the joy of Mom's life the past 21 months; step-great-granddaughter, Zoe; special nieces, Janice Brown, Gadsden, and Dorothy Scroggins, Arizona; special nephew, Al Tidwell, Florida; lifelong friends, Evelyn Weaver and Lucille Phillips, Oneonta.Pallbearers will be Richard Smith, Donnie Smith, Donald Leverton, Marion Farley, Larry Simpson and Jim Reid.Honorary pallbearers will be Don Blakely, Robert Kimbril, Bill Cox, Kenny Simmons, John Click, Bill Brothers, Ladies Sunday School class and WMU Ladies Quilting Group.Because our mother loved missions so much, we ask memorials be given to Siberton Baptist WMU Ladies Quilting Group, 627 Jones St., Attalla, AL 35954.
