Obituary of Roy Goodwin


LOUISVILLE, Ga. - GOODWIN, ROY C. 95, born September 19, 1915 in Louisville, Jefferson County, GA, died July 12, 2011 at his residence. Roy served 13 months (May 1933-July 1934) in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in Georgia, then went to Chicago, IL in February 1935. He attended Coyne Electrical and Radio School, then worked in a restaurant until December 1942, when he began work at Pullman Aircraft, before being inducted into the Navy in 1945. Upon his discharge, Roy returned to Pullman to build passenger rail cars. He then began and managed a dry cleaning and carpet cleaning business for many years and in 1960 he joined Clean Air Service, which he purchased six months later, naming it Fire Restoration. He was a member of Chicago South Elks #1596 for 36 years, 1956-1992, and joined Sertoma International, Highland Club (Chicago), in 1959, serving as Distinguished Club President, 1968-69 and became a life member. He moved to High Point (Brooksville, FL) in 1979 and joined the Golf and Lions Clubs. He served on the board of the Lions for 18 of his 25 year membership, receiving the Humanitarian and Melvin Jones Awards. Roy is survived by daughter, Patricia Jones, Jacksonville, FL; four stepsons, Phil Corrigan, Hoffman, MN, Leo Corrigan, Flossmoor, IL, Richard Corrigan, Tucson, AZ, Bob Hackel, Tell City, IN; stepdaughter, Joan Longtin, Tinley Park, IL; brother, John Goodwin, sisters, Eddie Faircloth, both of Augusta, Mary Johnson, Graniteville, SC; several grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren; and dear friend, Ruth Knigga. He was predeceased by his parents, three wives, Mildred Broughton, Virginia Corrigan and Jean Hackel; son, Roy E. Bud Goodwin, brother Glenn Goodwin, sister, Brunell Johnson and 1 grandson, Todd. Visitation is from 10:00 to 11:00AM followed by funeral service at 11:00, at Spring Hill United Church of Christ, 4244 Mariner Boulevard, Spring Hill, Monday, July 18.
