Rosemary Rita Coffey Johnson passed away peacefully on June 3 at her home in Montville, N.J., surrounded by her loving family. Rosemary moved to Montville in 2010 from Bernardsville, N.J., where she and her late husband, Russell, lived for over 50 years while raising their family of eight children. Rosemary celebrated her 90th birthday with family and friends on May, 18, 2014. Rosemary was born in Danville, Ill., as one of two daughters to Guy and Mabel Coffey. Rosemary spent her early childhood years in Dearborn, Mich., and Euclid, Ohio. While in Dearborn, Mich., she danced with Thomas Edison and Henry Ford at one of Henry Ford's dance recitals, which he would host for children during the Depression. At the age of 14, Rosemary's family moved to Santa Monica, Calif. Rosemary went on to attend St. Mary's College in South Bend, Ind., and the Wright McMahon Secretarial School in Beverly Hills, Calif. Upon graduation, she worked for Mr. Howard Hughes at Hughes Aircraft before moving to New York City in 1947 to be near her parents. It was while living in NYC and working at US Rubber Corporation that Rosemary and Russell met, married and began their family. They were married for 39 years before Russell's death in 1989. A devoted wife and mother, Rosemary made time to follow her passion of helping others in need. A lifelong parishioner of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, she was active in the PTA, teaching CCD, Eucharistic Ministry and in a grandparents group that provided daycare for the children of working families. Additionally, Rosemary was a Red Cross volunteer for over 20 years providing transportation for the sick and elderly. In later years, she was also a devoted member of the Anawim Community, highlighted by pilgrimages while in her 80s to the Philippines and Fatima, Portugal to aid the poor and needy. Rosemary was predeceased by her loving husband, Russell W. Johnson. She is survived by her eight children: Russell of Montville, Kathryn and her husband, William Masters, of Parsippany, N.J., Judith and her husband, Robert Wilson, of Cornwall-on-Hudson, N.Y., Mark and his fiancee, Sandra Pollock of Easton, Md., William and his wife, Jennifer, of Media, Pa., Robert of Chester, N.J., Greg of Lambertville, N.J., Carol of Bolinas, Calif., 14 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, her sister Margaret Roach of Los Angeles, Calif., and many nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, June 7, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Bernardsville. Visitation will be held on Friday, June 6, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Gallaway & Crane Funeral Home in Basking Ridge. She will be buried alongside her husband at Holy Cross Cemetery in Bernardsville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Our Lady of Perpetual Help, 111 Claremont Road, Bernardsville, NJ 07924 and the Anawim Community, P.O. Box 207, Oxford, NJ 07863.
