NORTH BENNINGTON -- Rose E. Hurley, 94, widow of William J. Hurley Sr., a resident of Pleasant Street, died peacefully with her family at her side on Friday, Aug. 26, 2005, at the Centers For Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington.Born in Bennington on May 19, 1911, she was the daughter of the late James P. and Elizabeth (Guiden) Hogan. She received her early education at the former St. Francis de Sales Academy and the former Bennington High School.A registered nurse, Rose received her nursing degree from St. Peter’s Hospital nursing school in Albany, N.Y., in 1934. She later did graduate work in New York City through an outreach program at Columbia University.She began her nursing career at the former Putnam Memorial Hospital in Bennington, working in both the operating room and maternity ward. She left the hospital in the early 1940’s to assume the position of Red Cross nurse for the Bennington area.Mr. and Mrs. Hurley were married on Jan. 5, 1946, at St. Francis de Sales Church in Bennington. Mr. Hurley died June 9, 1988.After her children were grown she resumed her nursing career doing private duty nursing. She later worked at Crescent Manor Nursing Home where she retired as director of nursing in 1977. She was a member of both the Bennington County Nurses Association and the Vermont State Nursing Association.Rose was a devout member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in North Bennington. She was known to many as an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox.Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law with whom she resided, Maggie and Greg Bird of North Bennington; a son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Linda Hurley of Shaftsbury; six grandchildren, Sean and Emily Bird of North Bennington, Christopher Hurley of Burlington, Scott Hurley of Shaftsbury, Darcy Olin of North Bennington and Karen Pascarella of Lynnwood, Wash.; four great-grandchildren, Adam, Whitney and Ethan Olin and Max Hurley; two sisters, Monica Corcoran of Bennington and Ann Lauzon of Schodack Landing, N.Y.; several nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two sisters and two brothers, Barbara Hogan, Edward “Tuffy” Hogan, Mary Martin and Patrick Hogan.The funeral will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home on Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2005, at 10:15 a.m. with a prayer and from St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in North Bennington at 11 a.m. where the liturgy of Christian death and burial will be offered. Friends may call at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home on Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. when the family will be in attendance. The wake service will be offered Tuesday evening.Burial will take place in the family lot in St. John’s Cemetery, North Bennington.In memory of Rose’s devotion to the nursing profession, contributions may be made to the Jeanne Ryan Nursing Scholarship Fund at Southwestern Vermont Health Care through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, VT 05201.
