Roger Q. Smyth, Jr.formerly of Chelmsford, Army Vet; 88 TYNGSBORO -- Roger Q. Smyth, Jr., age 88, a resident of Tyngsboro and former resident of Chelmsford, died Tuesday, December 30, 2014, at Lowell General Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Barbara J. (Mahoney) Smyth, to whom he was married for 62 years.He was born in Alderwood Manor, WA on June 1, 1926, and was a son of the late Roger Q. and Marian E. (Silvernale) Smyth. He received his early education in Glendale, CA schools and was a graduate of Glendale High School. He earned his bachelor's degree from San Jose State University and his master's degree from University of Southern California. He excelled in track and field in high school and college.Roger served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War.He had a lifelong passion for education and had worked in several capacities in education throughout the years in both California and Massachusetts, including as instructor for Boston College and as Assistant Superintendent of Schools in Chelmsford.Roger's greatest joy was spending time in the company of his adoring grandchildren and attending all their events and activities.In addition to his wife, he is survived by his five children, Roger Q. Smyth III and his wife, Grace of Exeter, NH, Kim Order and her husband, Steven of Tyngsborough, Dayna McCarthy and her husband, Jerome of Boxborough, Victoria Mahr of Lowell, Richard Mahr of Groton, and Steven Smyth and his wife, Brenda of Tyngsborough; and 19 grandchildren, Matthew, Patrick, Kaitlyn, Brandon, Emilie, Allyson, Joseph, Gabrielle, Nicholas, Marie, Anna, Peyton, Jillian, Magdalena, Ryan, Megan, Isabella, Roger IV, and John.SMYTH -- It being his wish, there will be no visitation. Family and friends are invited to attend his Funeral Mass to be celebrated on Saturday, January 10th at 9 o'clock at St. Mary Church, 25 North Rd., Chelmsford. Afterwards, there will be a reception at a location to be announced at the Funeral Mass. Interment will be private.
