CONTOOCOOK -- Robert V. Davis, 85, of Park Avenue, died Feb. 27, 2011, at home. He was born in Sutton, son of George R. and Grace S. Davis. He was educated in Warner schools. Mr. Davis enlisted in the U.S. Navy Armed Guard as an anti-aircraft, anti-submarine gunner on merchant ships. He served in every theatre during World War II and received an honorable discharge in 1946. He moved to Contoocook in 1948. Mr. Davis worked as a machinist at Kingsbury and Davis, FMC and Sylvania-GTE. He was president of H.R. Clough Inc. from 1976 to 1993 and had worked for that firm since 1968. He and his first wife, Marilyn C. Davis, ran H.R. Clough Inc. for 30 years. She predeceased him in 1995. He was a former amateur radio operator with the call letters K1VYW. He was a member of the Hopkinton Fire Department for 10 years. IN HIS LIFE: Mr. Davis was a 50-year member of Harris Lodge #91 F and AM of Warner; also a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason and a member of Bektash Temple A.A.O.N.M.S. of the Shrine. He served as Master of Harris Lodge and held several other offices. He was also Past Patron of Vestor Chapter #49 O.E.S. Bob was an avid fisherman, gardner and world traveler. He also enjoyed woodworking. He enjoyed good conversation with young as well as old friends. He was always interested in sports. He was a pitcher for several different teams in the area and was once offered a chance to try out for the long-since departed Boston Braves. He was a big fan of the softball teams at Hopkinton High and Ithaca College, especially during the pitching career of his granddaughter, Christie Davis. He also coached and umpired for several years in the Little League program in town and was an avid lifelong Boston Red Sox fan. He was also active in music, for many years he was a chorus member in several shows put on in town. He also sang in the Scottish Rite Consistory Chorus, as well the choir at the Contoocook Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Marcia E. Davis; a daughter, Joanne Silvestro and her husband John, of Londonderry, a son, Alan R. Davis and his wife Susan, of Contoocook; five grandchildren Blaine Robert Davis, Christie Davis, Jeffrey Silvestro, Jessica Silvestro and James Robert Silvestro; four great-grandchildren; three step-daughters, Sheree, Carol and Heidi; 12 step grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. SERVICES: Calling hours are Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Bennett Funeral Home 209 N. Main Street, Concord. A celebration of his life is Friday at 2 p.m. at Contoocook United Methodist Church, Maple Street, Contoocook. Spring burial will be in the family lot at Contoocook Village Cemetery.
