AUGUSTA -- Robert R. Washburn died Jan. 11, 2011, at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta. He was born in Rochester, N.Y., the son of Frederick J. and Clara M. Washburn. His father was born in Bangor, and his mother was born in Williamsport, Pa.He attended local schools in Rochester, N.Y., and Monmouth. He graduated from Monmouth Academy, and from the University of Maine in 1942. He served 40 months in the Army Air Force and was a B-29 flight engineer. He and his three brothers served a total of 15 years in World War II.He later worked for the Veterans Administration at Togus. He was the state commissioner/director of veteran services for 20 years. His proudest accomplishment during his tenure there was overseeing expansions. He had a part in the planning and development of the Chapel, Carillons and the Curtis Bells Plaza.He was a 40-year member of Western View Golf Course, and enjoyed bowling, fishing and hunting at his Kokajo camp in his younger years.He was married to his wife, Dorothy, who died in 2008, for 58 years. He is survived by two children, Carol A. Washburn of Augusta and Gary A. Washburn and his wife, Cindy, of Farmingdale.Other survivors are one brother, Walter Washburn, of Vienna, Va.; and one niece and several nephews.He was predeceased by his brothers, Frederick of Denver, Co., and William of Hemet, Calif.; sisters Helene Dorr of Augusta and Mary Hall of Connecticut; and both parents.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Kennebec Valley Humane Society, 10 Pet Haven Lane, Augusta, ME 04330.Burial will occur at a later date at the Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery.
