Obituary of Robert-M. White


WHITE Robert M. “Bob” White, 85, passed away Monday, November 27, 2006, at Quality Health in Fernandina Beach, following a long illness. Mr. White was born in Jacksonville, Florida, on February 6, 1921. the son of the late Glasgow Moore White and Laura Hall White. He was preceded in death by his sister, Martha White Lewis, of Marietta, Georgia. Mr. White graduated from the University of Florida as a chemical engineer in June 1943. Following his graduation from Officer Candidate School in Ft. Sill, Oklahoma, he served as an artilliarist in Italy during World War II. While in Caserta, Italy, in August 1946, he won the Mediterranean Theatre Tennis Doubles Championship and the Men's First Place Trophy. Following his discharge in 1947, Mr. White moved to Fernandina where he was employed by Rayonier as a purchasing officer. In 1951 he purchased Nassau Building and Supply Company, which he owned until his retirement in 1996. He was a longtime member and treasurer of the Duncan Lamont Clinch Historical Society of Amelia Island. In honor of his dedication and service, he was named Honorary President in 2004. He was a charter member and the treasurer of the Fernandina Restoration Foundation, an organization which established the historic district and restored Centre Street. He was one of the founders of the Fernandina Beach Chamber of Commerce. He served the city of Fernandina Beach on the Board of Adjustments from 1974 - 2003. In 1996 he received the Elsie Harper Volunteer Award for his many contributions to the community. He is survived by his wife of fifty-seven years, Mary Agnes Wolff White, of Fernandina Beach; a son Ralph Moore White and daughter-in-law Barbara Joe White of Taos, New Mexico; a son Clifford Hall White of Jacksonville; a daughter Agnes “Aggie” Louisa White Swails and son-in-law Marvin E. Swails, Jr., of Knoxville, Tennessee; three granddaughters Kalie Anne Swails and Kristen Amelia Swails of Knoxville, Tennessee, and Maria Rachel Miller White of Asheville, N.C., daughter-in-law, Theresa Bragg Reboulet of Asheville, N.C., a niece Laura Lee Lewis Holcombe and four great nieces and nephews of Marietta, Georgia. The family will receive friends from 5 - 7 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday at the Burgess Chapel with the Rev. Fr. George Young, officiating.
