NORWALK, Conn. -- Robert Kent Carter died Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2005, at Notre Dame Convalescent Home in Norwalk at the age of 84. He was the son of the late Stephen and Ella Nourse Carter. Born on Aug. 28, 1921, in St. Johnsbury, Vt., Robert grew up in Littleton, N.H., located in the heart of the beautiful White Mountains. As a teenager and young adult he worked as a delivery boy and later a telegraph operator for Western Union Tel. Co. He graduated from Littleton High School in 1939 and the University of New Hampshire in 1943. He was a World War II veteran, having served in the Army Air Corp. from 1943 to 1946. He was stationed in India for two of those years. Following his discharge from the service he attended New York Seminary school in New York City for two years.He was predeceased by his devoted wife of 44 years, Norine Sampson Carter, who died in 2002. He is survived by a daughter, Cynthia Whitmore and son-in-law Clyde Whitmore of Norwalk; his son, David and daughter-in-law Florencia of Bethel; eight grandchildren; one brother-in-law, Bruce Sampson of Trumbull; as well as a niece and nephew.Robert lived an active and full life and will long be remembered by his family and friends as a bright and caring person. He was membership director for the YMCA in New York City, New London and Norwalk. He later was the executive director for the Norwalk Senior Center in Norwalk for 20 years, until retiring from there in 1991. He was a long time advocate for the elderly services and was instrumental in planning the early growth of the Senior Center, which took place since its inception in the early 1970s.He and his wife lived in Norwalk for 33 years until their retirement, at which time they moved to Skowhegan, Maine, where they remained until 2002 when Robert returned to Norwalk.Robert was an avid reader and enjoyed traveling throughout New England. His greatest joy was spending time with family and friends. He was a member of Maine society of the Sons of the American Revolution, having been honored by them earlier this year for his public service. He was also a member of the American Legion Post No. 16 of Skowhegan and of NEON Inc. in Norwalk. He volunteered with Meals on Wheels and the Food Cupboard. He was also a member of the Norwalk Retired Men's Club. While living in Norwalk he attended St. Paul's Episcopal Church and the Congregational Church on the Green where he was an active member.Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 16, at the Raymond Community Funeral Home, 5 East Wall St., Norwalk.
