Robert Johnson, born in 1930, son of Russell and Grace, died on March 2, 2009.
JOHNSON, Robert Russell (BJ) July 1, 1930 - March 2, 2009 On March 2, 2009, Robert Russell (BJ) Johnson of Winnipeg died peacefully after a long and valiant struggle with Parkinson's disease. Born and raised in Edmonton, the son of Grace and Russell Johnson, Bob was a housing officer with Canadian Forces Base Winnipeg for 30 years. He was active in the leadership of the Air Cadet League of Canada (Manitoba), and served on the executive of the Kiwanis Club in Winnipeg. He also formed Stereo Tape Specialists Inc., and was a busy DJ in Winnipeg, recording many weddings, concerts, church services and other events. He loved the camaraderie he found through the CB Radio Operators, friendships that he cherished to the end of his life. BJ had a great love of music, which he expressed as a fifty-year member of the Golden Chordsmen (the Winnipeg Barbershop Chorus) from 1959 until illness forced his retirement. He was also a devoted member of McClure United Church, and sang in the choir for many years. To the end of his life music brought him comfort and joy. Bob is mourned by his loving family: his sister Peg Matheson and her husband Douglas of Edmonton; brothers-in-law Bob McLaughlin and Bob Matheson, sister-in-law Margaret Matheson; cousin Nancy Watson; a large extended family of nieces, nephews and cousins in Edmonton, Calgary, Vancouver and Victoria; and his cherished friends. He was predeceased by his infant sister Barbara Johnson; his sisters-in-law Janet McLaughlin and Gerri Matheson; and his brother-in-law Donald Matheson. The family expresses its gratitude to the staff of Calvary Place for their kind and loving care of Bob during the closing years of his life. A Memorial Service will be held in McClure United Church, Winnipeg, at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 14, 2009. In lieu of flowers, donations in Bob's memory would be greatly appreciated, either to McClure United Church, 533 Greenwood Place, Winnipeg MB R3G 3M1; to the Winnipeg Golden Chordsmen, c/o D. Petrie, 361 McAdam Avenue, Winnipeg MB, R2W 0B3; or to a charity of one's choice.
