Robert J. Gilman, 86, a resident of the Four Seasons at Wall community, passed away Wednesday, April 9, 2014, in the Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune, N.J., with his beloved family at his bedside. Relatives and friends are invited to call on Sunday from 2 to 6 p.m. at the O'Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Hwy. 35 at New Bedford Rd., Wall, N.J. 07719, and Monday morning April 14, 2014, from 9 a.m. until the time of the funeral procession at 9:45 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. at St. Catharine's R.C. Church, 215 Essex Ave., Spring Lake, N.J. 07762. Burial will be in the Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 350 Provinceline Rd., Arneytown, Wrightstown, NJ. He had maintained a summer home in Spring Lake, N.J., for his family since 1975, moving there permanently around 1990. He and his wife, Gilda, recently settled in Wall. Robert faithfully served his country in the U.S. Navy and remained in the Reserve thereafter. He was a proud graduate of Newark College of Engineering (now NJIT) and a member of the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society. Robert was employed as an electrical engineer in communications for RFL Industries in Boonton, N.J., until his retirement. He was a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. In Wayne, Robert was active in several civic and fraternal organizations, including the Jaycees, Chamber of Commerce, Our Lady of the Valley Church and Knights of Columbus Council 6534. He donated his free time for charitable work with the youth in Wayne. Robert was an avid card player and taught bridge. He was a jazz aficionado who played the clarinet and saxophone in a jazz band. More recently, he was a member of the Hudson South Club, celebrating his roots in Jersey City and sharing fellowship with other Hudson County natives while raising money for charities. Robert was predeceased by his parents, Samuel and Alice Kelly Gilman; his son, Robert; his daughter, Cynthia Bizzozzaro, and his six siblings. He is survived by the loving wife of 65 years, Gilda E. Blois Gilman: his children and their spouses, Patricia and Peter Glen of Berkeley Heights, N.J.; Kevin and Mary of Annandale, N.J., and Keith and Colleen of Scotch Plains, N.J.; his daughter-in-law, Nancy Gilman of Wayne, N.J., and his son-in-law, Michael Bizzozzaro of Manalapan, N.J.; his 12 grandchildren, Ruthann, Ryan, Elyse, Michael, David, Steven, Kelsey, Derek, Daniel, Christopher, Kerri and Alyssa, and his four great-grandchildren, Julianna, Dominick, Milena and Samantha.
