Robert J. Fain SchoharieRobert J. Fain, 83, longtime resident of Main St., Schoharie, died Monday evening, March 24th at his home in Cobleskill, surrounded by his loving family, after a long illness. Mr. Fain was born December 26, 1930 in Schoharie, NY, a son of John and Mary (Gardner) Fain. He attended Schoharie School graduating in 1948 where he enjoyed playing trumpet in the HS band. Bob received his BA in education from SUNY Albany and later, his master's in history and library science from SUNY. Mr. Fain enlisted in the US Army in 1951 faithfully serving his country in communications in Korea. Upon his honorable discharge, he returned to Schoharie to begin his teaching career at Jefferson High School. He later retired in 1992 from Schoharie Central School as the high school librarian and audio/visual technician. While at SCS he coached golf, tennis and wrestling. Previously, he taught high school history and math at both Schoharie and Jefferson High Schools. Bobby was a longtime member of the Schoharie Kiwanis Club serving as past president, a member of the Town of Schoharie Democratic Club and served as town councilman. He was an avid reader, enjoyed playing cards and a longtime NY Giants football and baseball fan. Survivors include his loving wife, Betty (Thompson) Fain whom he married January 5, 1952; his cherished children, Betty M. Fain of Hammondsport, NY, Mary F. (William) Griffith of Sloansville, Robert J. (Nelsie) Fain, Jr. of Prescott, AZ, Joseph E. (Elizabeth) Fain of Howes Cave, David M. (Helen) Fain of Shelburn Falls, MA and Dorothea Beth (Vincent) Yakoobian of Huntersville, NC; 16 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, John Fain of New Smyrna Beach, FL; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, Donald, Stanley and Richard. Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 27th at the Langan Funeral Home, 327 Main St., Schoharie. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 28th at Our Lady of the Valley RC Church, Wells Ave. and Main St., Middleburgh with Fr. William Gorman, celebrant. Burial will be later in the Old Stone Fort Cemetery, Schoharie. Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Mr. Fain to Catskill Area Hospice, 795 E. Main St. Suite #11, Cobleskill, NY 12043.
