COOLEY, Robert Heald, 84, passed away at home November 15, 2009, sur-rounded by his loving family. He was born June 6, 1925, in Milford, N.H. He graduated from Glen Ridge High School in New Jersey in 1943, as class president, All-State basketball player, and captain of his basketball team. He attended Cornell University before serving in the Submarine Service on the USS Sea Poacher during World War II. He was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries received during a surface battle. Following service to his country, he graduated from Baylor University in 1951. After his marriage to Carolyn Lindley of Tulia, Texas, the couple moved to Tampa in 1955. He worked at Pendola' s Men' s Store before joining Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Co., where he was an agent for 48 years. He was a leader in the Tampa Agency and a consistent member of the Million Dollar Round Table. He was a member of Tampa Life Underwriters, serving as its president in 1972. An avid sports fan throughout his life, he particularly enjoyed playing golf. He also found great pleasure in spectator sports and in coaching his son Craig' s Little League and Pony League teams. During his son' s football years, he was active in the Plant High Dad' s Club, was its president in 1980, and was the "Voice of the Panthers" from 1978 to 1982. In 1985, he completed the development of Salty Acres condos on Longboat Key, which he and his family and friends enjoyed for 21 years. Other than sports, his hobbies were cooking and gardening. He enjoyed traveling with his family and especially spending falls in New England. He was a member of Palma Ceia Presbyterian Church for 48 years, often serving as an elder. Through his grandfather' s trust, he donated the Casavant pipe organ for Palma Ceia Presbyterian Church and provided the funds for building and equipping a clinic in Uganda for children with HIV and AIDS. He will always be remembered for his warmth, positive attitude, unwavering thoughtfulness, and unselfish ways toward his family and friends. He lived a Christian life, and his integrity and character were evident in all that he did. He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Carolyn; his daughter, Laurie C. Bentley (Jack); his son, R. Craig Cooley (Jeanne); and his grandson, Brett C. Bentley. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Village Partners International for The Robert H.
