Obituary of Robert-H. Johnson


Robert H. Johnson Newport Robert H. Johnson, 68, of West Street, died on September 19, 2011, at the Sitrin Health Care Center, New Hartford, where he had been a patient for the past two weeks. Robert was born on February 13, 1943, in Herkimer, a son of the late Douglas Harold and Helen (Oakley) Johnson. He graduated from West Canada Valley Central School in 1961 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1962. On June 27, 1964, he was united in marriage with the former Donna LeClair at St. Johns Church, Newport. Bob started his career with Eastern Rock Products in 1966 and retired as an Asphalt Plant Operator at the Herkimer Hanson facility in 2003. Bob excelled in sports in high school and later enjoyed playing baseball in adult leagues. In more recent years, he took up the sport of horseshoes and golf, participating in local leagues. He equally looked forward to watching his grandchildren play sports. Robert was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed his many years of membership at Twin Vlys Hunting Club in the Town of Ohio. Bob was always ready for a good game of cards and, in his retirement years, enjoyed buying and selling antiques and collectables on EBay. His memberships include West Canada Valley American Legion Post #1524 and Kuyahoora Valley Council #10544 Knights of Columbus, both of Newport. Survivors besides his wife of 47 years, Donna, include one daughter, Debbie Kinsella and her husband, Bill, of Westmoreland; one son, Robert H. B.J. Johnson, Jr., and his wife, Brenda, of New Hartford; three grandchildren, Gabrielle, Alexander and Garrett Johnson; one sister, JoAnn Allen and her husband, Tom, of LaFargeville; one brother, Douglas Johnson and his wife, Sally, of Newport; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a grandson, Mitchell Johnson, and a sister and brother-in-law, Carolyn Sue and Dick Jones. A memorial service will be held at the Autenrith Funeral Home, Newport, on Monday at 11:00 a.m., with Pastor Thomas Allen, Bobs brother-in-law, officiating. Visitation will take place prior to the service on Monday from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider memorials to KVAC, Box 282, Poland, NY 13431.
