NORTH GREENBUSH Robert Bob Harry Horton, 81, died Sunday, October 31, 2004 at Samaritan Hospital, Troy after a long illness. A lifelong resident of Snyders Corners, he was the son of the late Clyde and Lillian Champine Horton and beloved husband of the late Nedra Miller Horton. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having enlisted prior to Pearl Harbor and remaining on active duty throughout World War II until he was honorably discharged in 1946. He served on the North Atlantic Patrol while stationed at Argentia, Newfoundland and earned his rank of Aviation Machinist Mate 1st Class while serving aboard the aircraft carrier, USS Randolph. Following his discharge, he returned to the Troy area where he was self-employed most of his life as a master craftsman in the building trades. A dedicated sportsman and outdoors man, he spent considerable time in the Adirondack Mountains where, over the course of many years, he gathered material for The Great Green Cathedral, a book he authored in 1975, depicting the adventures and legendary lore of the Adirondacks. In addition to his book, he also wrote the columns The Old Woodsman and Into The Outdoors, which appeared in local newspapers, and authored numerous freelance magazine articles. He was an avid conservationist and was the co-founder and charter president of The Adirondack Woodsmen Inc. Mr Horton is survived by his loving children, Harry Horton (Sandy) and Donna Honsinger (David), all of Pittstown and Gary Horton (Barbara) of Niskayuna; a brother, Thomas C. Horton of Wynantskill; 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son, Robert Clyde Horton of Newton, New Hampshire in 1999. Funeral service will be held Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at the Bryce Funeral Home Inc., 276 Pawling Avenue, Troy. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Interment, Elmwood Hill Cemetery in Troy.
