Robert G. Carter, 89, passed away Monday morning in Crawfordville, Florida. Mr. Carter, a widower, was born January 5, 1913 in Marianna, and was the son of former Public Service Commissioner Jerry W. Carter, and Frances Holifield Carter. Mr. Carter grew up in Tallahassee and was a graduate of Leon High School and the University of Florida. He had a long and distinguished career in public health in Florida, beginning as sanitation officer in Wakulla County, serving as a administrator for the State Board of Health, member of Florida Milk Commission, secretary of the tuberculosis hospitals of Florida, and overseer of federal hospital construction, the Hill-Burton program in Florida. Mr. Carter was a lifelong supporter of the Southern Scholarship Foundation which he served as president, executive director and member of the board. Mr. Carter was pre-deceased by his wife, Gertrude Miller Carter of Vero Beach. He is survived by his brother, David Carter of Jacksonville; his children, Frances Nell Carter of Macon, Georgia, Dr. R. Timothy Carter of Orange Park, FL, and Mike Carter of Crawfordville; his stepchildren, Marvin Carter, Stanley Carter, and Joyce Brooks of Vero Beach; his grandchildren, Elizabeth Pearson, of Canyon Lakes, CA, Karl T. Lies of Macon, GA, Casey M. Carter of Washington, DC, Kevin T. “ Bo” Carter of Jacksonville, Andrea P. Carter-Cohen of New York, Maria, Elena and Lucy Carter, of Crawfordville, and a devoted care-giver, Carrie Moody, also of Crawfordville. The family will receive friends on Friday, February 1 from 4:00-7:00PM at Harvey-Young Funeral Home in Crawfordville, FL. A Memorial service will follow at 7:00¸PM at Mr. Carter direction, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Southern Scholarship Foundation, 322 Stadium Dr., Tallahassee, FL 32304.
