Robert F. Samson went home to be with the Lord on June 27, 2011 after an extended stay at the Katherine Luther Home in Clinton. He was born July 31, 1920 in Utica, N.Y. He was a 1938 graduate of Utica Free Academy and attended Virginia Tech from 1938 to 1941. He was a Captain in the Army-Air Force during World War II, stationed in India and China from 1941-1946. After serving his country he returned to Virginia Tech, graduating in 1947. In 1943 he married Elsie McCarthy in Asheville, N.C. From 1950-1976 he worked for the federal government at RADC, Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome, N.Y. He enjoyed golf, trains, movies and vacationing in Boothbay Harbor, Maine. He was a devout Catholic and a generous person who would help anyone at anytime. Robert is survived by four sons: John and wife, Christine, Mike and wife, Holly, Tom and wife, Sandy, Tim and wife, Sue; nine grandchildren, Elsie Samson, Robert Samson, Matthew Samson, Michael Samson, Megan Samson, Brian Poppleton, Caroline Albrigo, Rory Samson, and Mary Samson; eleven great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Michele Holleran. He was predeceased by his wife, Elsie and brothers, Floyd and Donald. The family would like to thank the staff of the Saul Unit of the Katherine Luther Home for their care and compassion shown to Robert during his stay there. His Funeral Mass will be held 9:30 a.m. Saturday July 2, in the Church of the Holy Family in Vernon.
