Robert E. Jones, 64, of St. Augustine, died Feb. 1, 2006 at Flagler Hospital. He was born in Atlantic City, N.J. and had resided in St. Augustine for the past nine years. Bob began his career at the age of 17 when he had pony rides along the beach. He loved animals and he loved the traditions of the American fairs, so he created the "Bob Jones Petting Zoo." This charming and colorful enterprise became so popular that it was hired as an attraction by state and county fairs across N.E. United States. The zoo grew to include all kinds of animals from elephants to zebras, monkey to llamas, and Bob moved to New Hope, Pa. where he bought a house with enough land to keep his beloved animals happy. In Solebury, Pa., he got involved in local politics and was elected to the Solebury Township Board of Supervisors from 1986 to 1992. In 1995, he suffered a series of strokes that left him severely disabled, so he sold his business and moved to St. Augustine. He soon became a familiar and popular figure in St. Augustine riding around in his wheelchair downtown. He got involved with the ACLU and worked to improve handicap access around St. Augustine. He was an exceptionally honorable, intelligent and lovable man who will be greatly missed by his many friends.He leaves behind in lifetime companion of 45 years, James Musarra, of St. Augustine; his sister, Norma Baker, of San Jose, Calif.; brother, Bruce Jones, Ocean City, N.J.; and two nieces, Debby and Dawn.A Celebration of Life service will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 12, 2006 at The Center for Positive Living, 1795 Old Moultrie Road.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the ACLU or to the American Diabetes Association.Kotrady-Hudgins-Croyle Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.PAID NOTICE(Please sign the guest book at www.staugustine.com)
