Obituary of Robert-E. Johnson

->BANGOR - Robert "Bob" E. Johnson died December 27, 2014, at a Bangor hospital with his loving wife by his side. He was born in Olney, MD, the youngest child of William and Bessie Johnson. He spent his youth in Washington, DC., playing on both the basketball and tennis teams at Coolidge High School, where he graduated in 1952. He declined a tennis scholarship to Geo. Wash. Univ. and instead enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He was stationed at Dow AFB in Bangor from 1953-55. While there, he met his wife-to-be, UMO student Mary Jane Cohen. Married in 1955, they then spent 18 months at his A.F. assignment in Omisawa, Japan. He then attended and graduated from Ricker College and Syracuse University, the latter with honors, earning a Master's Degree in Social Work. He remained in his chosen profession throughout his career, preferring to be called a "professional helper" and "Dr. Bob". He was the first Social Services Director at E.M.M.C., having started that dept. At the time of his retirement, he was employed by E.M.M.C. as the Employee Assistance(E.A.P.) Counselor at the Great Northern Paper mill in Millinocket, working with individuals and families with personal and emotional problems. E.A.P. work is what he enjoyed most. Bob will be remembered for his great sense of humor and the love for and pride and joy in his family. He also had a great love for wildlife, music, and quotes, which he spent much time reflecting upon and sharing with others. Bob was predeceased by his parents and siblings. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Jane; daughter, Kathryn Johnson, and husband, Dana Morin, of Steep Falls; daughter, Julie Johnson, and grandson, Bryan Benson, of Atlanta, GA; and daughter, Suzanne Johnson, and granddaughter, Necole Harrison, of Brunswick. Bob was devoted to his wife and family. He also held special affection for two family pets: Squee, the "human cat", and Baby, a loveable black Persian. At Bob's request, there will be no funeral service or visitation hours. There will be a Memorial Mass of Remembrance for immediate family at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Chronic Pain Association or a social service agency for the poor or elderly. Arrangements are under the care of Direct Cremation of Maine, 182 Waldo Ave., Belfast, ME 04915.
