CLARKSVILLE CARTER, ROBERT E. died Friday at Westminster Healthcare Center. He was a retired music teacher of 43 years and a native of Sellersburg, Indiana. He began his teaching career in St. Joseph County and Winamac before becoming choral music director at New Albany (IN) High School for 30 years. He ended his career as director of fine arts in the New Albany- Floyd County School System. He was director of the Centenary United Methodist Church Choirs for 21 years. He was a graduate of Indiana University School of Music with a bachelors and masters degrees and played violin for four years in the Indiana University Symphony. He was one of the Indiana University quartet known as the "Gentleman from Indiana". He belonged to the Emeritus Alumni Club and was a 51 year member of the Kiwanis Club of New Albany where he served as pianist and a past president. He was voted an Outstanding Young Man of New Albany and formerly served as president of the Indiana State Choral Festival Association. He was a member of the Jennie Gebhart Music Study Club in New Albany, co-founder of the Floyd County Council of the Arts and a member of St. Mark's United Church of Christ in New Albany. He was married for 38 years to the late Alice Carr Carter who was the mother of three children; a son, Dr. Robert R. Carter of New Albany and two daughters, Marilyn Kay Whitehead of Kennebunk, ME, and Rosemary Ann Danishek of Stone Mountain, GA. He is also survived by his wife of 27 years, Dorothy Heath Carter, a step-daughter, Marianne Doyle of Indianapolis, IN, 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren His funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mark's United Church of Christ, 222 E. Spring St., New Albany, with private burial in Kraft-Graceland Memorial Park, New Albany. Visitation will be from noon-8 p.m. Tuesday at Kraft Funeral Service, 2776 Charlestown Rd., New Albany. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Arts Council of Southern Indiana.
