-> Robert "Bob" Davis, was born February 22, 1931 and was a native of New York State having grown up in a rural farming community of Delhi, NY, in the Catskill Mountains. Bob arrived in Georgia in 1952 as an entomology technician with the U.S. Army. Georgia has been his residence since then except for three months in Texas with the Army and a year in Asheville, NC, with the U.S. Forest Service. After his discharge from the Army at Fort Stewart, in 1954, he entered the University of Georgia and secured a BS in Agriculture with a major in Entomology and a Master of Science with a major in Entomology. After working for three years with the Georgia Department of Entomology (now Department of Agriculture, the U.S. 3rd Army Medical Laboratory, Fort McPherson, Georgia and the U.S. Forest Service, he returned to the University of Georgia and secured a Ph.D in Zoology with a major in ecology. From 1963 until 1965 he was an entomologist with the USDA in Tifton, Georgia. In 1965 he moved to the Entomology Department at the University where as an Assistant and an Associate Professor, he taught entomology for four years. In 1969, the USDA employed him as the Director of the USDA Stored Product Insects Research and Development Laboratory in Savannah, Georgia. As the laboratory director, Bob conducted, directed or monitored research on the protection of food and feed throughout the U.S. and in a number of foreign countries such as Chile, Egypt, France, German, India, Israel, Italy, Poland and the former USSR. In 1989, Bob retired from the Federal Government after 30 years of service and started the consulting business, Pest Management Consultants and Associates, Inc. The company operated a small pest control company for four years and Bob was involved for the last 10 years primarily in support of litigation, teaching short courses in pest control and conducting insect resistant packaging research on food and feed. Bob authored over 190 scientific publications, several book chapters and two books and made numerous presentations before learned entomological societies. He held offices and committeeships in the Georgia Entomological Society, the Entomological Society of America, the National Pest Control Association, the Armed Forces Pest Management Board, the International Congress of Entomology and the International Working Conference on Stored Product Protection. Bob is survived by his wife, Marie Mairholtz Davis; a son, Stephen Robert of Savannah; two daughters, Andrea Michelle Deeds (Derrick), Atlanta and Frances Elizabeth Davis of Minneapolis, MN; a brother, Dr. George B. Davis (Marcia) of Millbrook, NY; sister-in-law, Mrs. Andrew F. Davis, Jr., Mohowak, NY; nephews, Andrew Ferris Davis IV, Walton, NY, Clark Morgan Davis, Santa Rosa, CA; niece, Shara Morganstern, Mohawk, NY and a cousin, Edmund R. Davis (Rosemary) of Vero Beach, FL and his constant companion, Margo Dog. Memorial services will be held 3:00 p.m., Sunday, February 19, 2006 at Bull Street Baptist Church.
