BANGOR - Robert "Bob" D. Brennan, formerly of Bangor, passed away July 1, 2011, at Gosnell Mem-orial Hospice House, Scarborough. He was born Oct. 20, 1925, in Bangor, to Carl and Mary (McEwen) Brennan. Robert attended St. John's Parochial School and John Bapst High School. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II and fought in the Invasion of Southern France. Robert was wounded in combat as his field artillery battalion crossed the Rhine River in Germany and he was awarded a Purple Heart. In April 1945, Robert fought and was wounded in the liberation of the concentration camp at Dachau. The condition of the prisoners of Dachau created a memory that never left him. He was awarded a second Purple Heart. After World War II, Robert attended the University of Maine, Orono, and graduated with a degree in business administration. During college he met and fell in love with Theresa Tedeschi. They married and started a family together, raising three sons. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service as an accountant for almost 40 years. Robert was committed to assisting the many veterans returning home from war. He helped to establish and build Norman F. Dow Veterans of Foreign Wars Post, Bangor, and was its commander in the early 1960s. He was always available to other veterans and never said "I'm too busy" to a fellow "brother." Bob spent many evenings with troubled veterans - helping them cope with personal issues, being a friend, sharing a laugh or just listening. He understood their problems and shared their joys and pains. Robert and Theresa were politically active with the Democratic Party in Maine. They often traveled to fund-raising bean suppers and spaghetti dinners throughout the State in support of Democratic candidates. Among the highlights of an active political life were several gubernatorial balls and an invitation to President Lyndon Johnson's inaugural ball. His personal time was devoted to family activities. As the father of three boys, Bob was active parenting, coaching and cheering at their sporting events. He was baseball manager, swimming instructor and if necessary an umpire. In recent years Bob lived in Gorham at the Gorham House, where he made many friends among the staff and his fellow residents. In April 2011, he was honored by the Remember ME Project, which recognizes the lifetime achievements of Maine's long-term care community. During a local television news interview at the ceremonies, he spoke of his enduring gratitude for his family and friends. Robert is survived by his sons, Michael and his wife, Margaret Brennan, of Bangor, Leonard and his wife, Susan Brennan, of Portland, and John Brennan of Madison, Wis.; two grandchildren, Thomas Brennan and Kathleen Brennan; his sister, Mrs. Dorothy Kelley of Fort Lauderdale Fla.; brother, Carl Brennan of Savannah, Ga.; and several nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of 56 years, Theresa (Tedeschi) Bren-nan; parents; and brother, Frederick Brennan. A private memorial service and interment with military honors will be held Thursday, July 7, at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Augusta. Arrangements are under the guidance of Independent Death Care, 660 Brighton Ave., Portland.
