Obituary of Robert-A. Johnson


Dr. Robert A. Age 70, of Blossburg, Pa., died February 27, 2003 at the Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre, Pa. Bob was born on April 19, 1932 in Blossburg; a son of the late Frederick and Laura (Gruver) Johnson. After graduating from Blossburg High School with the class of 1950, he proudly served with the U.S. Army in the Korean War. On September 5, 1953, he married Marilyn Coolidge in Wellsboro and their lives were blessed with four sons. Bob's love for learning continued throughout his life. In 1959, he received his B.S. Degree in Science Education from Mansfield State College, concentrating in Physics and Biology and graduating with honors. In 1963, he received his Masters in Biology from Cornell University. Bob received his PhD in Biology and Environmental Education from Cornell University in 1968. Mr. Johnson taught at the Mansfield Junior-High School and later with the Painted Post Schools. He was a Teaching Assistant at Cornell University and an Associate Professor at Miami University of Ohio. Bob then returned home to Blossburg and was a professor at Mansfield University for over 20 years until his retirement in 1989. Bob's memberships included, a 32nd degree Mason of the Blossburg F&AM Lodge No. 350, The Canyon Pilot's Association, EAA, a past member of the NSTA and the 410 Flying Club. For over 30 years, he served as a member of the Blossburg Municipal Authority where he was acting secretary. Bob was an avid fly fisherman, pilot and hunter. Together with his wife, they enjoyed canoeing, bicycling, skiing, photography, gardening and traveling. He also was a talented woodworker and naturalist, but his passion was flying. Surviving are his loving wife of 49 years, Marilyn; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Gary Johnson of Summersville, W.Va, Mark (Cindy) Johnson, Newnan, Ga., Kevin (Tina) Johnson, Divide, Co., Keith (Kim) Johnson, Wellsboro, Pa.; nine grandchildren, Craig, Eric, Angela, Kyle, Jonathan, Megan, Sean, Sierra and Christie; a sister, Dorothy (Rexford) Adams, Covington, Pa.; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends. Dr. Johnson was preceded in death by two brothers, Richard and William Johnson. A memorial service will be held at 1p.m., Tuesday, at the St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Blossburg with Rev. Richard Fox officiating. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice. Arrangements are in care of the Zwicharowski Funeral Home, Blossburg.
