EPPING — Richard "Buster" Bourne Sanborn, 70, died Aug. 2, 2010, at the Exeter Hospital after a period of declining health.He was born May 25, 1940, in Exeter, N.H., son of the late Richard F. and Rachel Louise (Bourne) Sanborn.Richard was a lifelong resident of Epping, and was a graduate of Watson Academy, Class of 1958. In 1962, he received his BA from Plymouth Teaching College and immediately began employment in September as a science teacher at the Lincoln-Akerman School in Hampton Falls. Richard spent his entire career, 45 years, working at the school, serving many years as the school's principal and retired in 2007 from the positions as the vice-principal and again science teacher. He was a member of the Plymouth Retired Teachers Association and the NH Retired Teachers Association.Mr. Sanborn was very involved in local organizations including, member of the Epping Community Church, former Superintendent of the Sunday School program at the church and was instrumental in the building of the former Sunday school wing, member of the Rockingham Grange, and he belonged to numerous historical societies and served as guest speaker on numerous occasions anytime he was asked to speak about trains in that local area.Richard was a train admirer all his life. In his earlier days, he would travel an average of 20,000 miles a year by way of train, all throughout the United States and Canada. He was a historian and avid collector of train memorabilia. Richard also wrote the Town of Epping Bi-Centennial Publication. There was a Retirement Scholarship Fund created in his name for an annual recipient at Winnacunnet High School.He is survived by a brother, Charlie Sanborn and his wife, Judy, of Epping; a sister, Priscilla Mills and her husband, Edward, of Atkinson, NH, and several nieces and nephews.Calling hours will be held on Friday, Aug. 6, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 9 Pleasant St., Epping.A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 7, at 11 a.m. at the Epping Community Church, 22 Pleasant St., Epping.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Epping Community Church Building Fund, PO Box 307, Epping, NH 03042.To sign the online guest book, please visit www.brewittfuneralhome.com.Visit www.fosters.com/obits for an online guest book.
