Richard Lee, born in 1919, father of Ga and Helen Lee, died on February 24, 2012 at 92 years old.
Richard E. Lee - McDONOUGH - Richard E. Lee, age 92, of McDonough, GA died Friday, February 24, 2012 after a brief illness. He was born in the green house, the home of his grandparents, in Brooklet GA on Nov. 18th, 1919. He graduated from Brooklet H. S. and moved to Savannah to work at the Central of GA Railroad. He retired from the Railroad and worked at Kaiser Agricultural Chemicals where he retired. He was a veteran of World War II where he severed as a Lt. and forward observer with the 314th Field Artillery Battalion, 80th Infantry Division. After the war he returned to Savannah and served with the GA National Guard. For many years he was Capt. of B Battery of the 118th. He retired as a Major from the United States Army Reserve in Nov of 1979. Richard was a past faithful navigator of the Knights of Columbus in Savannah. He was past president of the Chatham Artillery, and member of the Savannah Volunteer Guards, and the American Legion in Thunderbolt, GA. Richard was active in his parish church of St. James Catholic Church in McDonough and his former parish at Nativity Catholic Church in Thunderbolt, GA. He was a 9th generation American descending from Col. Richard Lee and Anne Constable who arrived from England in 1041-42 and settled in the northern neck of Virginia where they established one of the most prestigious families of America: the Lees of Virginia. Richard is survived by his daughter, Helen Lee Ray of McDonough, GA; grandchildren, Patricia (Michael) Austin of McDonough, GA, Michael (Kerry) Ray of Macon, GA, and Richard (Carla) Ray of California; great-grandchildren, Finian Ray, Ciana Ray, Cecelia Ray, Helen Austin, and Michael Ray; and a brother, Jack D. Lee. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, February 28, 2012 at St. James The Apostle Catholic Church. Interment will be at 11:00 AM Wednesday, February 29th at the Catholic Cemetery of Savannah. The family will receive friends Monday, February 27, 2012 from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM at the Funeral Home.
