Obituary of Richard J. Garvey


Richard J. Garvey was Lunenburg teacher, football coach; 80 LUNENBURG Richard J. Garvey, 80, of Lunenburg, MA, died unexpectedly, March 19, 2009. He was born in Fitchburg, on October 20, 1928, a son of the late John and Harriett Garvey. He graduated from St. Bernard's High School and received a football scholarship to the University of Ohio. He survived a plane crash on his trip to college and later joined the U.S. Marine Corps. He served in Korea from 1950-1953 and then attended Fitchburg State College where he earned a Bachelors degree in 1957. From 1957 to 1988, he taught at the Lunenburg High School and Turkey Hill Middle school where he also served as an Assistant Principal. He began Lunenburg's football program in 1960 and served as head coach until 1972. He was inducted into the St Bernard's Central High Football Hall of Fame in 1984 and the Massachusetts High School Football Coach's Hall of Fame in 2000. He leaves his wife, Barbara (Campbell) Garvey of Lunenburg; two daughters, Judith and her husband, John Brooks of Vienna, VA, Melissa and her husband, Lester Nicholson of Durham, NH; grandsons, Bradford and Mark Nicholson; and granddaughter, Tess Nicholson of Durham. He is also survived by sisters, Tina and her husband, Norman Melanson of Leominster, Helen Mahan of Fitchburg, and Margaret and her husband, Arthur DeBonville of South Yarmouth. He was predeceased by his brother, John Garvey of Portland, OR, Marie Roy of Fitchburg, Roberta Brown of Worcester, and Brenda Magane of Andover. He also leaves behind sister-in-law, Virginia Welch of Townsend; along with numerous nieces, nephews and dear friends.
