Richard A. Carter, 85 of Hanover died on November 26, 2014 at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Brockton after a period of failing health. He was born in Braintree, son of the late Frederick and Eileen (Meehan) Carter and was raised and educated in Holbrook. He was a longtime Hanover resident and enjoyed summering in Wareham at his generational family home and he spent many winters in Florida. Mr. Carter had been employed as a carpenter with Ford Construction Co. for more than 30 years before his retirement. He also was a Certified Scuba Diver and served with the South Shore Neptunes Rescue Team for many years. Richard was known to be a talented handyman and was always fixing something. He loved bird watching and Sunday morning trips to the Hanover Gift Shop with one of his grandsons. He was the former husband of Una M. (Keith) Barstow and was predeceased by his second wife Marion (Fraser) Carter. He was the father of Diann M. Crugnele of Norton, Donna L. Poor of West Bridgewater, Richard A. Carter, Jr. of Holbrook, Debra L. Deneen of Hanson, Gail A. Matthews of Yarmouth, Clay V. Matthews of Brockton and the late Patricia A. Aaron. In addition he is survived by 17 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren and his loving dog, Starr. The family welcomes friends and loved ones to celebrate his life on Monday December 1, 2014 from 10:30-11:30 a.m. in the Magoun-Biggins Funeral Home, 135 Union St., Rockland.
