JOHNSON, REVEREND LINDA JEAN ACOFF Reverend Linda Jean Acoff Johnson, age 57, a native of Bessemer, Alabama was the eldest of ten children. Rev. Johnson was a member of Petty's Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church before accepting her call into the ministry in 1999. Rev. Johnson graduated from Brighton High School in 1970 and matriculated at Stillman College. She later entered Bessemer State Technical College to become an LPN. She worked as an LPN at several area hospitals. She eventually enrolled in Lawson State Community College and became a Registered Nurse. She was employed at Lloyd Noland Hospital for nearly twenty-five (25) years in various capacities. Her colleagues, especially those on Section 4A, were like family and most of them have remained in contact with each other. Rev. Johnson's most recent employment was at UAB Medical West. At UAB West, she was a Nurse Manager over the Infusion Department and the Dialysis Unit, which she established with the assistance of Dr. Jane Gehlsen. Prior to her arrival at UAB West, there was no such Department. She was a certified Central Line Specialist and a certified Chemotherapy and Infusion Administrator. She was also certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). She was an active member of the Infusion Nurses Society. Rev. Johnson served as spiritual advisor for the Birmingham District Youth Choir of the A.M.E. Zion Church, where she mentored several youth and young ministers. Many young people came to Christ as a result of her evangelism at various Bible Studies and musical concerts with many choirs that toured the metro area in the early 1980's. She was known for her fiery and anointed preaching of the uncompromising Word of God. Rev. Johnson preached her first sermon at Petty's Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church in 1999. In 2001, she was appointed to Anderson Temple in the Warrior area. She led the congregation in establishing a breakfast program, a tutoring program, and various children's ministries. Under her leadership, several capital improvements were made including the installation of central heating and air and the addition of new bathrooms. In 2007, she was appointed as Pastor of Carter's Temple. Her last appointment was at Thomas Chapel. She was an ordained Elder in the A.M.E. Zion Church and Associate Dean for the Fayette-Jasper District Ministerial Course of Study. She served as a member of the Necrology Committee and the Admissions Committee for the North Alabama Conference. Reverend Johnson departed this life on June 30, 2009. Welcoming her home are her mother, Mary Winfield Acoff; sister, Janice Acoff; brother, Rev. Roosevelt Acoff, Jr.; grandparents, Lula Winfield, Earnest Winfield, Viola Acoff, and William Strother. Cherished memories will remain in the hearts of her three children: Kimberly Johnson, Dr. Rushton Johnson, Jr., and Janice Johnson; one granddaughter, Justine "Bubbles" Johnson; father, Roosevelt Acoff, Sr. (Deborah); seven siblings: Mr. Leslie Acoff; Carl Acoff, Sr.; Ms. Alfedo Acoff; Cassandra Acoff-Bradford (Otis); Sharon Acoff Frazier (Mark); Dr. Viola Acoff; Valerie Acoff, Esq.; special nieces and nephews: Candace Acoff, Althea Acoff, Markus Acoff and Carl Acoff, Jr. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 8, 2009, at 12 Noon at Metropolitan A.M.E. Zion Church, 1530 4th Ave. North, Birmingham. Burial at Highland Memorial. Presiding Elder Dr. Donnell Williams, Officiant; Bishop James McCoy, Eulogist. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 7, 2009 from 1:00 pm to 8:00pm at Chambers Funeral Home, Bessemer. The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Chambers Funeral Home directing.
