MECHANICVILLE Mrs. Rene Smith, 84, of No. Crystal St., Hemstreet Park, died Thursday, May 1, 2003 at St. Mary's Hospital, Troy. Born in Warrington, England, August 22, 1918, Mrs. Smith met her husband during World War II, married and moved to Stillwater, N.Y. after the war. She was a Mechanicville-Stillwater resident the rest of her life. A homemaker, Mrs. Smith had been involved with the local PTA, enjoyed knitting and was a member of the War Brides Assoc. Rene was a devoted wife and mother, who was known by many and liked by all. Her husband of 54 years, William A. Smith, died January 30, 2000. Survivors include her daughters, Jean H. Smith of Mechanicville, Shirley (Richard) Werneburg of Stillwater; a son, Geoffrey W. Smith of Mechanicville; grandchildren, Brian Smith, Laurie and Kevin Werneburg, David Lewis and Karen Smith; and a great-granddaughter, Sydney Smith. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the DeVito-Salvadore Funeral Home, 39 So. Main St., Mechanicville. Burial in Saratoga National Cemetery.
