->SUDBURY, MASS. - Rachel Virginia Davis Johnson, 93, died peacefully after a yearlong battle with cancer at her son, Peter Johnson's, home in Sudbury, Massachusetts on October 27, 2014. Her devoted son Peter, his wife Susan and granddaughter Rachel were at her side.She will be greatly missed. In addition to her son Peter and wife, Susan of Sudbury, MA, she is survived by her son, Dale and wife, Ann Johnson of Belchertown, MA and her son, David and wife, Pat Johnson of Swanzey NH. Rachel was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Chessell Davis of Montville, Maine along with her 15 siblings. Her beloved husband of 60 years, Frank Johnson, died in 2007. She was treasured by her grandchildren, Rachel Johnson, Sandra Potter and her husband, Jeff, and Brian Johnson and his wife, Jennifer. She also leaves 7 great-grandchildren, Jillian, Zachary, Nathan, Christopher, Jolene, Jessica and Hayden.Rachel was born in her ancestral home in South Montville, Maine on January 6, 1921 and married Frank Johnson on August 9, 1946 in Keene, NH. Rachel and Frank raised their children in Surry and Swanzey NH. Rachel returned to her ancestral farm in Maine owned by her great grandparents in 1984. Rachel was particularly proud of her family heritage being the 10th generation grandchild of the Mayflower Pilgrims John Alden and Pricilla Mullins and Myles and Barbara Standish. Rachel graduated with high honors from Maine Central Institute and went on to earn her nursing degree from The Greenwich Hospital School of Nursing in Greenwich Connecticut in 1945. She worked as a registered Nurse at the Greenwich Hospital until she married Frank Johnson and moved to Keene NH in 1946. Rachel went back to nursing in 1949 in Keene NH at the Elliott Community Hospital and had a successful career in various nursing roles from floor nurse to being in charge of the Intensive Care unit and her last position as Director of the recovery room at the newly named Cheshire Dartmouth Medical Center. Rachel lived a full life enjoying her many past-times including her love of reading, art, and music, especially classical. She was an accomplished artist and sang many solos for various musical groups. Rachel and her husband Frank enjoyed maintaining their apple orchards and many acres of lawns and gardens at their lovely farm in Maine. Rachel was a very religious woman and was what one would call a true Christian. Her many charitable works spoke volumes about her character.There will be a memorial service on Saturday November 8, 2014 at 2 PM at the Liberty Baptist Church, 100 Main Street, Liberty Maine with a reception to follow at her farm in South Montville, Maine. There will be an interment service at her burial site in Surry NH in July of 2015 and all are welcome at both services and receptions. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, Rachel had requested that contributions be made in her memory to The Liberty Baptist Church, 100 Main Street, Liberty Maine 04941.
