Piedmont - Rachel Orene Bishop Coleman Smith, 92, of Piedmont, passed away Tuesday, November 13, 2012, at her home. Graveside services will be held Friday, November 16, 2012, at 2 p.m. at Midway Baptist Church Cemetery, Seth B. Coleman and Rodney Ledbetter officiating. Visitation will be from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m. at Crestwood Funeral Home. After Johnny Coleman's passing in 1968, Rachel began a career in nursing. She and Perry Smith married in 1974 and moved to Columbia, Tenn., living there until they retired in 1980 and moved back to the Piedmont area. Rachel was preceded in death by her parents, Offie and Willie Bishop; husband, John Hugh Coleman Sr.; son, Arthur Allen Coleman; three brothers, Arthur, Edward and Charlie Bishop; and husband, Charles Perry Smith. Rachel attended Glencoe High School and Career Institute, Gadsden, Alabama, and worked for Dr. Corley Odom, Gadsden, and OB-GYN Associates, Columbia, Tennessee. She loved her family, nursing, her community and church family, members of New Hopewell Baptist Church and Midway Baptist Church. She is survived by her family, sister, Louise Bishop Anderson; sister-in-law, Dorothy Bishop; children, John "Butch" (Linda) Coleman, Offie Bennett "Benny" (Donna) Coleman, Sally Smith Shamblin, Barry (Linda) Smith; daughter-in-law, Mary Jane Coleman; grandchildren, Stacey Coleman, Brandon Coleman, John (Tina) Coleman, Seth (Beth) Coleman, Rachel Coleman (Danny) Haas, Lara (Jeremy) Siltala, Ken Smith, Kevin (Kandy) Smith; great-grandchildren, Tyler, David, Allen, Brianna, Rylee, Madison, Isaac, Erin, Kirstie, Caitlin, and Jake; beloved nieces and nephews. Her dear friends, Lois Hinkle, Margarite (Mutt) Welch, and Inez Sebolt will miss her friendly voice and caring attitude. Special thanks to care-giver, Kristy Langford, and to the caring staff of Amedisys Hospice. Donations may be made to the Piedmont Rescue Squad or Amedisys Hospice.
