SOUTH WESTERLO Ruth Palmer, 96 years of South Westerlo, N.Y., passed away at her home on November 9, 2004. She was born in Freehold, N.Y. on October 13, 1908, daughter of the late Ernest and Grace (Abeel) Slater. Ruth began teaching in the Greenville Free Academy in 1927 and moved to the new Greenville Central School when it was built in 1932. She married Leonard M. Palmer in 1935 and they moved to Corning, N.Y. in 1936 where she also taught school. She and her husband returned to South Westerlo in 1945. She returned to teaching at Greenville Central School in 1951 until her retiremnet in 1968. In her early years, she played the organ at Greenville Presbyterian Church and at the Christ Episcopal Church. For a time she was the choir director for the South Westerlo Congregational Christian Church and her husband played the organ. She was also a member of the Maranatha Valley Chapter O.E.S. A faithful member of Christ Episcopal Church, she was the organist and choir director for several years and also served her church in many other ways. She was also an avid bridge player and loved the Old Bridge Club. She will be remembered as a beloved mother and grandmother, a faithful teacher and a dear friend to all who knew her. She was predeceased by her husband, Leonard M. Palmer on September 9, 1989; her step-mother, Manuella (Helen) (nee Feeney) Slater and three brothers, Robert, Joseph and Bradley Slater. Surviving are her son, Galbreath Palmer of South Westerlo, N.Y.; a daughter, Priscilla Genne and her husband Thomas of Corvallis, Ore.; a grandson, William P. Genne of Corvallis. Funeral service will be Monday 11 a.m. from Christ Episcopal Church, Rte. 32, Greenville, N.Y. Friends may call at the Cunningham Funeral Home, 4898 Sr81, Greenville, N.Y. on Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. Interment will be in the Locust Cemetery. Those who desire may contribute in her memory to the Christ Episcopal Church Memorial Fund or to the Greenville Public Library.
