CARBONELL--Robert. Bob was born March 20, 1927 in San Salvador, El Salvador, died April 26th, 2013 in Miami, FL of complications from pneumonia. Survived by his wife of nearly 63 years, Evelyn (Porges), of Coconut Grove, FL and New Canaan, CT; their five children and their spouses: Armando (Jean), Robert (Patricia), Margaret (Greg), John (Cheryl), and Juliet (Bo); brothers: Ricardo and Rafael; pre-deceased by brother Carlos and sister Marina. Grandfather of 16; great-grandfather of three; uncle to many. A scientist who earned a doctorate in pharmaceutical chemistry from the University of El Salvador and studied food biochemistry at Purdue. He devised a new method for curing green coffee, which led to a job in research at Standard Brands, precursor to RJR Nabisco. He was awarded patents for instant pudding and a process for concentrating coffee and tea without losing flavor. He rose to Vice Chairman of RJR Nabisco and CEO of Del Monte. Under his leadership, Nabisco dominated the "cookie wars" of the 1980s, using computerization to ensure uniformity in favorites like Oreos and Ritz. Bob led the American Trade Consortium, negotiating with Gorbachev on opening the Soviet market to American products. Purdue awarded him an Honorary Doctorate and Outstanding Food Scientist Award. He later was President and CEO Bionaire Inc. and Tetley USA. He retired in 2000, enjoying photography and gatherings of his large family. Interment will take place in CT.
