Raymond P. Shea, 80, of Salem, beloved husband of Betty (Brennan) Shea passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, September 16, at the Kaplan Family Hospice House surrounded by his family after a period of declining health. He was the loving father of Ann Shea-Conkle and her husband Doug Conkle of Beloit, WI and Julie Shea Norris and her husband William Norris of Danvers, MA. He was the proud grandfather of Phillip and Emily Busam of Beloit,WI and William and Christopher Norris of Danvers, MA. He is also survived by his brothers D. Michael Shea of Georgetown, MA and Robert Shea of Salem, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers William and Leonard Shea and his sisters Evelyn Melville, Audrey Garrity, and Patricia Brophy. Ray was born in Salem, MA to William and Marion (Goucher) Shea. After graduating from Salem High School, he earned his Bachelor's degree from the Massachusetts Maritime Academy in 1954 and commissioned as an Ensign in the United States Navy. After being honorably discharged in 1957, Ray sailed as 2nd Assistant Engineer on an oil tanker for Energy Transportation Co., sailing the Gulf Coast to India route. He then earned his Master's degree in Education from Salem State College in 1963, and taught Math in the Beverly school system. In 1966, Ray was appointed Juvenile Probation Officer at the Salem District Court, where he retired as Chief Probation Officer in 1990. Ray was a Trustee of the Salem Public Library, a retired member of the Board of Directors of the North Shore Bank, and also served on the Board of Directors for Historic Salem Inc. Ray was a gentle but strong man with a great sense of humor. He will be remembered as a humble, generous, dignified, and immensely kind man. Ray enjoyed watching the Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots, history documentaries, and maritime stories. Most of all, Ray enjoyed being with his family. He was truly a fiercely loyal and devoted family man, and will be deeply missed. His funeral will be held on Saturday, September 22, 2012 at 9:15 A.M. from the Murphy Funeral Home, 85 Federal St (cor of North St) Salem to be followed by a funeral Mass at 10:00 A.M. in Immaculate Conception Church, 15 Hawthorne Blvd., Salem, MA. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be Friday from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Interment will be in Greenlawn Cemetery, Salem.
