Obituary of Rachel-Baker Smith


SMITH, RACHEL BAKER Rachel Baker Smith passed away on June 4, 2012, after having lived a full life for 96 years. She was born November 9, 1915, and lived most of her life on a farm in Blountsville, Alabama, where she enjoyed working in her vegetable garden and taking care of her flowers. She was always ready to help others and especially enjoyed baking brownies for the many that enjoyed them. Maw-Maw (to her grandchildren) was the oldest member of Bethlehem Baptist Church where for many years she taught a children's Sunday School class. She was a retiree of Blue Bell Industries in Oneonta, Alabama, with 25 years of service. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jacob Andrew and Mary Clara Baker, 3 brothers; Henry, Willie, and Isaac Baker, 2 sisters; Missy Daniels and Eula Brooks, her husband, Raymond, 3 children; Nadine, J.D., and Erma Jean Smith Pinyan and one great grandchild, Justin McBurney. Survivors include 2 children; Mary Burleson (Dick, General) of Hoover, and Bob (Barbara) of Trussville. There are 8 grandchildren; Debbie Wood (Wendell), David Pinyan (Annette), Dale Pinyan (Pam), Karen Gossett (Joe), Richard Burleson (Denice), Mary Jo Bartlett (Barry), Robin Smith, and Marty Smith (Felicia); 12 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, and friends. The family would like to thank Fairhaven Retirement Center and UAB Highlands Hospital, especially Dr. Lynn Crawford and the ACE unit, for the wonderful caring spirit they shared with the family. The funeral service will be held Wednesday, June 6, 2012, at 2:00 P.M. at Blountsville Funeral Home, burial will follow in Rock Springs Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 12:00 P.M. until service time on Wednesday. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make donations in memory of Rachel Smith to Fairhaven's Fountain of Love, 1520 Cooper Hill Road, Birmingham, Alabama 35210.
