Pope John Paul II Karol Jozef Wojtyla, poet, playwright, philosopher and priest. Born Wadowice, Poland on May 18, 1920. Ordained priest in 1946; Professor of Theology at Catholic University of Lublin 1956-78; Auxiliary Bishop of Krakow 1958-63; Archbishop and Metropolitan of Krakow 1964-78; named a Cardinal in 1967. Elected Pope 1978, taking the name John Paul II. Died in Rome on April 2, 2005. Books of Condolence will be available for signature at the following churches on Wednesday, April 6: Notre-Dame Cathedral and Saint Patrick's Basilica, and on Saturday, April 9 and Sunday, April 10 at St. Hyacinth's Polish Parish. A Memorial Liturgy will be held on Wednesday, April 6 at 5:00 p.m. at Notre-Dame Cathedral. A Commemorative Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, April 7 at 7:30 p.m. at Notre Dame Cathedral. The Polish Community will celebrate a Commemorative Mass at St. Hyacinth's Polish Parish on Saturday, April 9 at 6:00 p.m. All are welcome.
