WOODFORD - Phyllis L. Smith, 86, of Rivers Edge Community Care Home in Bennington and formerly of Woodford, died Feb. 6, 2012, at her residence, following a long illness. She was born in Readsboro, March 20, 1925, the daughter of Art Ward and Margaret Stitt, and received her education locally. She married Olin C. "Joe" Smith on March 9, 1945, in Bennington. Mr. Smith died in 1996. In earlier years, Mrs. Smith was employed at several local companies, including Bijur, Union Carbide Corp., Greenberg's and Art Ward's. For many years, she owned and operated Smith's Trailer Park in Woodford and also served as commissioner of the Woodford Cemetery. She enjoyed traveling throughout New England and swimming. Survivors include four children, Marilyn Gardner of Pownal, Pamela Monroe of North Bennington, Gerald and William Smith, both of Woodford; 11 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by two sons, Joseph and Scott Smith. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10, at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home where friends may call from 1 p.m. prior to the service officiated by the Rev. Robin Greene. Burial will be at a later date in Woodford Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Bennington Rescue Squad or Second Chance Animal Shelter, in care of Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, VT 05201.
