Peter Owen Callanan, 45 YARMOUTH - Peter Owen Callanan, 45, died peacefully in his sleep Nov. 11, 2005 at the Maine Medical Center. He was born in Albany, N.Y., on Jan. 3, 1960, the son of Mary and Charles Callanan who moved their large family to Baltimore where Owen spent his early childhood. and where his father was Headmaster at the Park School. Owen resided at various special schools in Pennsylvania and Kentucky before moving to Maine. Owen was a blithe spirit. Some labeled him handicapped since he couldn't hear well or speak, but he was a master of communicating with body language his love of life and was fun to have around. His big smile brightened the day for everyone he was with, and his explosive ahHah laugh made us laugh right along with him. Owen was an observer of life's passing parade and would often stand aside to watch others having fun at parties or athletic events. But he also would enter in and enthusiastically dress up for Halloween and participate in his unique shuffle on the dance floor when invited. He loved unwrapping his own and everyone else's presents at Christmas. He loved to eat with great gusto, especially spaghetti, his Mom's homemade applesauce and ice cream. Owen was a champion at jigsaw puzzles and could construct a 300-500- piece puzzle at breakneck speed. A satisfied ahHA erupted when he placed the final piece. He loved carpentry and was a great help in building the family log cabin vacation home in Phippsburg, being especially adept at pounding nails and usually missing his dad's fingers. Owen loved to walk and went into overdrive when faced with a long open path ahead such as the Royal River Park in Yarmouth or the three-mile trail around Back Bay in Portland where he charged ahead while his Dad jogged behind, desperately trying to keep up. He so enjoyed our family gatherings in the summer, wrestling with his brothers, taking walks on the beach with his sister$ and canoe trips down the river for a picnic with all his large family. Owen's last few years spent in Maine were enriched by the friends he made at The Spurwink Schools where he lived and worked. He touched their lives in so many ways and was rewarded and nurtured by their friendship, respect, compassionate care and love. He suffered many discouraging setbacks with his failing health during this past year, but he was always supported by a whole host of people at Spurwink and beyond, whose lives we feel have been made a little happier and a little better by his influence and for just being Owen. Owen leaves behind the ones who loved him most - his family; his parents, Chuck and Mary; brother, Reid and wife Cathy and their children E.J. and Bella; brother, Tom and his wife Kim and their children Kaitlin and Tucker; sister, Martha and her son Peter; sister, Sarah Starbird and her husband Harry and their children Elizabeth and Alisha; sister, Mary Hoellrich and her husband Scott. A Celebration of Owen's life will be held on Friday, Nov. 18 at 4 p.m. at Camp Hammond, 275 Main St., in Yarmouth, for Owen's relatives and friends whose lives were somehow touched by this remarkable person. Arrangements by Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Rd., Portland. No flowers please, but contributions may be made in his name to: The Spurwink School 26 Bridgton Rd.
