Obituary of Peter Kelly


Peter Cameron Kelly of Fredericton, NB passed away peacefully on March 22, 2004 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital. Born in St. Vital, MB on May 22, 1912, he was predeceased by his parents John Cowan and Agnes Cameron Kelly; also three brothers Jack, Jimmy and Stewart. He is survived by his wife Peggy Hobbs Kelly; one son Peter and his wife Theresa (Presley). Pete was a professional hockey player in the N.H.L. and A.H.L. from 1935-1942 and was a member of two Stanley Cup Championship teams with the Detroit Red Wings in the 1935-36, 1936-37 seasons. He was a supervisor in the Y.M.C.A. War Services from 1942-46, serving in Canada and England. He was the Athletic Director at U.N.B. from 1947-73 and coached the U.N.B. hockey team for 20 years. He played in numberous golf tournaments both as an amateur and as a professional for many years. Pete was inducted in to the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame in 1978 and in to the Fredericton Sports Wall of Fame in 1992. He was also inducted in to the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame in 1989. Arrangements have been entrusted to Bishop's Funeral Home, 540 Woodstock Road Fredericton, NB. There will be no visitation at the funeral home by request. Following cremation, a private family service will be held in Peoples Cemetery, Charlottetown, PEI, where interment will take place in the family plot. Donations to a charity of the donor's choice would be appreciated by the family. [Daily Gleaner]
