OLD TOWN - Pauline Esther LaForge, 88, passed away Monday, Jan. 28, 2008, at a Bangor health care facility, after a period of failing health related to non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. She was born Sept. 12, 1919, the daughter of Clarence and Lucienne (Peters) LaForge. After raising her family, she worked many years at the University of Maine in Orono. After her retirement, she continued to work as a housekeeper for an area family and Holy Family Parish. Always active, she enjoyed volunteering. Her passion was singing and entertaining. For many years she would sing, play instruments and perform at area nursing homes with the Golden Girls, Sunshine Gals, and independently. Many will remember her as the "Spoon Lady," which patients affectionately called her. Pauline loved to knit, crochet and sew, and spent many hours tending her vegetable and flower gardens. A faithful communicant of Holy Family Church, she participated in the choir and was lector for many years. A true matriarch, affectionately known to everyone as Meme, Pauline loved and was so proud of her family. With the birth of her great-great-grandson in December, she survived to see five generations in her lifetime. Pauline was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Alphonse; three brothers, three sisters; and grandson, Patrick Cavanaugh. She is survived by her loving children, Theresa Cavanaugh of Milford, and Alphonse "Skip" LaForge and wife, Joyce, of Florida; grandchildren, Theresa Paul and husband, John, of Old Town, Robert LaForge of Pennsylvania, David Cavanaugh and wife, Sandra, Lisa Dionne and husband, Scott, Jacqueline Coffin and husband, Donald; special family member, Rose Levasseur, all of Milford; great-grandchildren, Jessica Paul of Rumford, Kristen Paul and companion, Brandon Eastman, Valerie Dionne and companion, Matthew Curtis, of Old Town, Sarah Cavanaugh, Mathew Cavanaugh, Heather Coffin, and Joshua Coffin of Milford; and great-great-grandson, Benjamin Paul Eastman of Old Town. Pauline is also survived by many special friends as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins, too numerous to mention. The family thanks Dr. Segal and CancerCare of Maine for providing 18 years of excellent care and Stillwater Healthcare for their loving care and support during these final months. Visiting hours will be held 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, at Birmingham Funeral Home, 438 Main St., Old Town. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 1, at Holy Family Church, 429 Main St., Old Town, with Father Thomas Farley officiating.
