March 13, 2012 Paul W. Gilbert, 96, of DeWitt, NY, passed away Tuesday evening at the Nottingham with his wife, Katherine at his side. Born in 1916 in Rochester, NY, Paul earned a BA and an MBA from the University of Rochester. In 1940 he received a Ph.D in mathematics and physics from Duke University. Paul taught Mathematics at Texas Tech and West Point before accepting a position at Syracuse University in 1946. He served as an associate Chair of Mathematics for 26 years at Syracuse University from 1955 until he retired in 1981. Paul also served in the Army Reserves for 20 years, teaching and reviewing the math curriculum at West Point. He retired as a lieutenant colonel. In 1991, Paul and Katherine endowed an undergraduate scholarship, "The Gilbert and Sullivan Scholarship" for the Natural Sciences and Mathematics at Syracuse University. Paul was predeceased by his wife of 47 years, Virginia (Cott); and his twin brother, Donald who died while serving in World War II. He is survived by his wife, Katherine (Sullivan); daughter, Emily Haffenden of Mayville, NY; son, James W. Gilbert of Fort Lauderdale, FL; sister, June Klitgord of Haverhill, NH and St. Augustine, FL and four stepdaughters, Katherine Jacobs of Lansing, MI, Elizabeth Azzam of Raleigh, NC, Nancy McDowell of Skaneateles, NY and Mary Madore of Bloomington, IN. Paul has three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. For the last three years, Paul resided at The Nottingham in Jamesville, NY where he was cared for with both competence and compassion. He was a modest, soft-spoken and genial colleague and friend. Paul will be missed by all who knew him. Services will be Saturday, March 17 2012 at 11 a.m. at Park Central Presbyterian Church.
